Sullivan's Rock

Sullivan’s Rock Bush Walk

After a pleasant drive through quiet streets on the Sunday morning of the long weekend, 22 Y Striders assembled in the car park to begin the Sullivan’s Rock Bush Walk. Led by Bill , Pam and Kevin we set off up and over the “rock” to begin the walk.

Soon we were on the Bibbulmun track and were heading south towards Mt Cooke. Although the day was heating up rapidly, walkers had come well prepared with plenty of water and snacks. There was a brief stop mid-morning and then on to the lunch break at the campers’ hut for lunch.

This was the halfway point and after lunch some decided to return, while 7 very enthusiastic walkers elected to head on and up to Mt Cooke.  This was and additional 5 extra kilometres of challenging walking that included a very steep ascent up on to the ridge to walk to Mt Cooke and back.

Many of the remaining group decided to return.  This was another enjoyable walk but by now it was quite warm. There were some lovely areas well shaded by tall trees that kept walkers cool.  The open areas were hotter and more of a challenge and everyone was tired by the time they reached that final steep hill just before the return over the Rock.

Making the walk even more pleasant were the many wildflowers that were on display along the track.  Nancy was the avid photographer and her photos present the beauty of the Australian bush in spring.

Walkers then went on to meet at the C Y O’Conner tavern for a well-earned meal and a relaxing time. Thanks to Ann R for organising the meal at the tavern.
